Sitting Up and a New Tooth

Caleb’s been sitting up for a few weeks now but for only a few seconds at a time. Today, I got some awesome toys for sitting babies at a garage sale today and tried them out with him. he sat up without my help for at least five minutes playing with those toys. Even though I know it’s a gradual process, I think I can officially say he’s sitting up on his own.

He’s also cutting a new tooth! Andy and I had some suspicions that he was teething again when he became a slobbering, velcro baby starting a few days ago. Sure enough, When he woke up from his afternoon nap, he was sporting a brand new tooth right next to the first one.

Phew, I can’t keep up with this kid!

We had our first opportunity to let Caleb get the pool for the first time. I was so excited for him to wear his cool dinosaur bathing suit with matching hat. They were both huge on him, but that made it even cuter. Unfortunately, by the time we got in the water he was a bit too sleepy and the water was a bit too chilly. He had a great time clinging to me for dear life, but then the cold water got to him. We stayed in for a total of about five minutes. The rest of the time, he was wrapped up in the towel on Mommy’s lap watching Daddy play Marco Polo with all the other family members.

Thankfully, the pools in Arizona will get to bathtub temperature in just a few weeks. I think he’ll like that better.

Home Improvements

By Briana - Bri's Posts, Projects - May 16th, 2009 1 Comment »

Over the past few weeks, we made some renovations to our living room. When we moved in, most of the house had tile floor and the living room had a huge arcadia door. The problem with the door was that it was a 20-something year-old squeaky single pain heat monster. During the 100+ degree summer, the living room would be at least 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house, and with it being the most used room of the house, this was a problem.

We also had a rug we bought for the previous house to cover up the tile in the living room. Since Caleb’s been here, I’ve been sitting on that floor more than the couch and have noticed how thin and uncomfortable it was. We decided to invest in a new dual pane door and some nice new carpet to help the living room feel more inviting. a few weeks ago, we got our new carpet installed and the door was installed yesterday. I can’t believe how much more comfortable the room is now. The carpet is so thick and plush and makes the room look twice as big. The door reduces glare and definitely keeps the heat out.

5 Months

By Briana - Bri's Posts, Family - May 13th, 2009 2 Comments »

5 months has come and gone since this little guy’s made his grand entrance into the world. To say that he is an absolute joy would be an understatement. I feel so privileged to spend all day with him. The way he explores his world fascinates me.

As of today, Caleb can roll over both back-to-front and front-to-back with ease, He’s still working on sitting up unassisted but all I really have to do is hold his hips so he doesn’t topple over, he’s got the upper body balance down. He looks where you point and will reach out for something he wants. A couple of times he has reached out and leaned forward to the person he wants to go to. His attention span is growing now that he is a little more capable of manipulating objects. He will sit on the floor and play with toys for a while before he’s ready to move onto something else. with those capable hands comes more pulling on hair and pinching arms. He has also perfected the fine art of screaming for attention. Nights really couldn’t be better right now and naps are predictable although I wish they were longer.

Solids are going well. He’s eating oatmeal in the morning and barley at night. He seems to already be getting pretty bored with cereal, but we’re waiting one more month to start other foods.

As I was editing these pictures, I couldn’t help but notice how much more Caleb looks like a little boy and less like a baby. I have to contribute part of that to his lean body shape. I think he may have one or two rolls on his thighs but that’s it. Andy was the same way as a baby and if you put their pictures side by side, their bodies are almost identical.

The MagMyPic.com Journey…

By Andy - Andy's Posts, The Wide World of Web - May 11th, 2009 No Comments »

maggleSo I decided to begin to gauge some interest in selling MagMyPic.com.  Mag has been my baby along with Matt for what’s going on two years.   We started the site with hopes of success, but we weren’t really prepared for the type of success we’d end up having.  We started the site and as the hits trickled in, we would get excited…the day we hit 1,000 hits a day, the day we hit 10,000 hits in a day.  Then the whole thing blew up, and before you know it we were pushing 80,000 visitors today, making 70,000 magazines a day and in a whirlwind while we tried to keep servers up and running.  But it was fun.

Mag eventually settled down and we partnered with pYzam/TreeRoom who promoted the site with us.  It’s cruising along okay I suppose, but between full-time jobs, full-time babies and such, I’ve decided to at least look at selling it and moving on from Mag once and for all.  We’ve seen some interest so far but not quite in the price range we’re hoping for, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.  Either way, Mag’s been a fun and unexpected journey that has been good to us and hopefully helped teach us a lot about the industry that we can apply to all of our future ventures.

A Boy and His Dog

By Briana - Bri's Posts, Family - May 8th, 2009 1 Comment »

img_4340Caleb has recently discovered that Toby is not only fun to watch, but interactive as well! Toby loves to lick hands and feet, and Caleb’s hands are especially delicious. In turn, Caleb gets wet slobbery kisses from the dog. Whenever he spots Toby, he’ll reach out his hands for the dog to lick. It’s a new game for both of them. I’m really impressed by how gentle Toby is around Caleb; he never gets too excited (which is very difficult for this hyper little dog). I’m glad to see these two are forming a bond already.

Golden Oldies - Sleepy Booty Boogie

This is a hilarious video taken when Caleb was about a month and a half old. He fell asleep on Andy  in such a way that his butt would rise up in the air when Andy breathed in deeply. I had to get it on video to show Andy what it looked like. And now you fine folks get to see it too.

First Tooth

By Briana - Bri's Posts, Family - May 4th, 2009 1 Comment »

It came out of nowhere! Not even any symptoms. I’ve been dreading this impending phase since the colic/reflux days began to ebb. I’ve heard horror stories how children would stay up all night crying in pain from a cutting tooth. Even my pediatrician told me I would know he’s getting a tooth by the red swollen bump on his gums. I thought one was coming about a week ago because one spot on his gums was raised a bit, but second guessed myself because he wasn’t acting any differently; no excessive drooling, no red cheeks, no fever, no fussing… nadda. Then, a few days ago, I saw a white ridge in his mouth. I put my finger in there to feel around; Caleb bit down… hard, and there was no doubt in my mind that the pain inflicted from his bite was, in fact, from his first ever tooth! This beautiful little dental pearl is on the lower left front of his mouth. I can’t believe he went through cutting his first tooth without one complaint. Let’s hope we can get though the terrible twos with the same ease.

A pawn in my own game

briandy1Bri and I have been playing a bunch of chess lately…seems like we go through a chess phase every year or so.  After about 10 games back and forth, I’ve come to realize that chess is simply a medium for one to live out their entire personality in a game.  I play chess exactly the same way that I live life.  So does Bri.

I’m quick to get excited at an opportunity on the board, so quick in fact that it bites me in the butt sometimes.  If I see something that looks like a great move I sometimes lack the patience to think through it, and I make the move instantly so as not to miss it.  It pays off sometimes in a big way, but it seems like I end up getting taken by my blind excitement as I leave an opening on the table.  I feel like it’s a perfect parallel to the way I am at work sometimes.  Not necessarily blind to all the consequences but when I see something that can be great for the company, I want to run to it as fast as I possibly can.  Checkmate is just around the corner some of the time.  But sometimes it’s not, and I just don’t want to believe it.

Bri plays her personality to a tee as well.  Methodical with each big decision, frustrated with an oversight if she somehow misses something.  Super excited for the big moves.  At least I can win some battles in chess…Bri wins all the real life ones.  :-)
